Best Response - What are the English language proficiency requirements?
English Language Proficiency Requirements
Students whose primary language is not English will be required to fulfill the English Language Proficiency Requirement in one of the following ways to be considered for admission:
(Please note that some programs require scores higher than the ones stated here. Check the Graduate Calendar for each program's required admission score.)
- A minimum score of 80 (Internet-based test), 550 (paper-based test) or 213 (computer-based test) on TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language - the University of Calgary's TOEFL institution code is 0813);
- A minimum score of 7.0 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System);
- Successful completion of Level 4 of the EAP Program (English for Academic Purposes) at the University of Calgary. For information on the EAP program, please visit http://education.ucalgary.ca/eap/. Please confirm with the Graduate Program Administrator in your prospective program whether or not the program will accept EAP in lieu of a TOEFL or IELTS score.;
- Some departments or graduate programs may agree to waive the English proficiency testing requirement in certain circumstances, such as the possession of a baccalaureate degree or its academic equivalent from a recognized institution in which the language of instruction is English. Please contact the graduate program to which you plan to apply for further information.
When applying for Graduate school, application materials are sent directly to the specific graduate program or department to which you are applying:
